Norah Mbewa Atinda, a young Kenyan woman committed to youth leadership and participation, has been elected as Relator for Africa. In this role, she seeks to amplify the voices, priorities, and aspirations of African youth, while contributing to greater representation and collaboration among young people across the continent.
Norah currently serves as the National Coordinator of Kenya, where she leads and coordinates youth initiatives and strengthens networks of young Dominicans throughout the country. She actively collaborates with the Dominican Youth Movement (DYM) in Kisumu, driven by the conviction that young people should have an environment where they can participate and contribute to positive change in their communities.
Get to know Norah...
Norah belongs to the community of St. Martin de Porres in Kenya and is of Luo ethnicity. She describes herself in three words: cheerful, kind, and adventurous. She has been a member of the movement since 2019.
What she enjoys most about the DYM is the formation sessions: “We listen to different points of view, get to know the people in the group better, share our struggles and joys, and encourage one another.”
Speaking about young people in her region, she highlights that they are always on the move: something new is always happening in everyone's life, whether it is studies, a new job, or marriage.
Her inspirational saint is St. Thomas Aquinas, whose feast day coincides with her birthday. She especially admires his teaching on truth: that reason can help us discover truths about God.
And when it comes to a DYM gathering, the traditional Kenyan dish that cannot be missing is fish with ugali.
A message for IDYM youth
“You can always achieve what you set your mind to; commitment matters more than numbers.”
